During a recent meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the vital role of solidarity among NATO nations in enhancing Ukraine’s ability to withstand ongoing challenges. Rutte reassured Zelenskyy that the alliance would remain steadfast in its unity.
In a press conference following their discussions, Zelenskyy stated, “The strength of Ukraine is not solely reliant on military assets; it fundamentally depends on our collective resolve.”
He further articulated, “If our allies maintain their unity, we will prevail.”
NATO Secretary-General Rutte immediately affirmed, “We are committed to that unity, and President Zelenskyy can count on our unwavering support.”
In his ongoing efforts to secure Western support, Zelenskyy presented his ambitious five-point “victory plan”, aimed at encouraging Russia to engage in negotiations to conclude the conflict. However, a crucial aspect of the plan is anticipated to raise eyebrows among Western allies: a formal invitation for Ukraine to join NATO while military operations are still ongoing.
Rutte conveyed that Ukraine would eventually become a member of NATO but did not specify a timeline for this significant milestone. Earlier in July, NATO’s 32 member nations underscored Ukraine’s path to membership as “irreversible” during a summit in Washington, yet a definitive date for accession has yet to be announced.
In Belgium, Zelenskyy also held discussions with European Union leaders as part of a broader campaign promoting his “victory plan.” This initiative seeks not only to strengthen Ukraine’s position but also to foster enduring partnerships with Western allies.
