Are you passionate about running? Push your limits by participating in Algeria’s exhilarating 222 km race through the majestic Sahara Desert.

Nothing captures the essence of adventure quite like running 222 kilometres through the captivating Sahara Desert.

The Algeria Treg beckons adventurous souls to embark on a marathon experience like no other. In its inaugural editions, the event attracted hundreds of runners to Timimoun, where they navigated diverse terrains including sweeping dunes, serene oases, rugged plateaus, and towering mountains.

Recently held in Djanet, approximately 100 athletes from around the globe undertook this thrilling challenge, following a meticulously planned trail that winds past ancient rock formations and across expansive sandy plains.

With blue skies and temperatures hovering in the mid-20s, dipping into the late teens at night, runners were pushed to their endurance limits and tactical thinking during this six-day event.

Mark your calendars: the race returns to Djanet in September 2025—and here’s why you should consider signing up.

What is the Sahara Algeria Treg?

The Treg organization specializes in trail running and desert marathon holidays worldwide, offering unique multi-day, multi-distance races where participants must navigate using a GPS device while carrying all essentials, including water, food, and extra clothing layers.

Although the terrains change from location to location, the company is known for its breathtaking and unique settings.

The Sahara Algeria Treg comprises five stages ranging from 35 to 56 km, starting in the oasis city of Djanet in southeast Algeria. Runners traverse the stunning Tassili n’Ajjer National Park, reaching the guelta of Essendilène before journeying back through the dunes of Erg Admer. Water stations are conveniently positioned throughout the route.

This race is open to anyone aged 18 and older, or those aged 16 with parental consent. It’s advisable for participants to have previous experience running at least one 25 km trail in mountainous environments.

What You’ll Experience on the Sahara Algeria Treg Trail

Encircled by dunes and striking sandstone plateaus, Djanet serves as a gateway to the surreal landscapes of the Sahara.

The desert is home to some of the world’s most remarkable prehistoric rock carvings.

Runners along the Sahara Algeria Treg trail will pass the ever-impressive 12,000-year-old rock engravings of Tassili n’Ajjer, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient artwork narrates tales of climate shifts, wildlife migrations, and humankind’s evolution on the fringes of the Sahara.

The biosphere reserve is also celebrated for its striking orange and black ‘rock forests’ and breathtaking sunsets.

With a stunning backdrop of sandstone mountains and vast stretches of golden dunes, participants have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region’s rich local traditions and savor authentic Saharan cuisine like couscous, tagine, and fresh mint tea.
