Can I stay overnight in normal parking spaces? Everyone should know these camping rules

More and more Germans are enjoying their vacation with a mobile home. The pandemic in particular shows the advantages of the hotel on four wheels. However, there are some rules that must be observed when spending the night in the motorhome.

These are particularly important at the moment, as overnight stays on campsites are currently prohibited due to the current Corona situation and more people are therefore being tempted to spend the night in parking lots, for example.

Can I stay overnight with the motorhome in a parking lot?

If you stay in the parking lot for one night, you are not allowed to grill outside or enjoy the sunset.

Actually, you are not allowed to spend the night in your vehicle, including your mobile home, on public parking lots in Germany. However, there is one exception: As you can see in the video, the legislator allows you to stay overnight in your vehicle if you are no longer roadworthy. That means: You can sleep in your vehicle, including your mobile home, for one night. However, this does not mean that you can really camp here. Setting up camping equipment, such as chairs or barbecues, is still prohibited and can result in a fine of around 200 euros.

In addition, you should definitely pay attention to where you are allowed to park your motorhome at all. There are a number of rules that must be observed here. Always keep an eye out for signs prohibiting the parking of mobile homes. Some parking spaces have these signs, so you are not allowed to sleep in your motorhome here, even if you want to be roadworthy again.
