Coffee, vinegar & Co .: With these home remedies you can drive disgusting smells out of the apartment
Nobody wants nasty smells in their own apartment. There are a few tricks and home remedies for combating annoying odor sources that can get rid of even the most stubborn odors. In the video you can see why you shouldn’t throw away coffee grounds.
Whether in the kitchen, in the hallway or in the wardrobe, nasty smells can quickly drain your nerve. So that you can breathe freely through your nose again as quickly as possible, there are a few tips and tricks to drive away the annoying smells – you don’t even have to work with chemical aids, but can fall back on tried and tested home remedies.
Tips against the smell of smoke
Regardless of whether you smoke yourself or friends of yours like to grab a cigarette – nobody wants the smell of smoke in their apartment for long. Fortunately, there are a few tips and tricks on how to avoid the smell of nicotine in the apartment despite smoking or – if it is already there – remove it.
The worst can be avoided if you ventilate well while smoking and then empty the ashtray. However, in apartments where people smoke regularly, the smell of smoke settles over time. There is a simple tool to prevent the smell from penetrating the furniture: rose water. Wooden furniture must be impregnated with rose water beforehand, otherwise the smell of smoke cannot be removed, and rose water can remove the stubborn smell of upholstered furniture afterwards.
There are three simple home remedies to filter the smell of nicotine from the air during or after smoking: coffee, vinegar, and lemon wedges. Simply distribute a few bowls of hot water around your apartment and add either coffee powder, a dash of vinegar or lemon wedges and you can breathe deeply again.
Lemon and flour will help in the refrigerator
Especially in the refrigerator, unpleasant odors can develop quickly, which cannot be prevented by storing the food. To drive the unwanted smells out of the refrigerator, you can use a lemon, for example.
Squeeze the citrus fruit and put the juice in a small container in the refrigerator. This home remedy neutralizes odors. With a bowl full of flour, you can also tackle the stink and provide odorless air without any chemicals.
With baking powder against smelly shoes
The most recently worn shoes are usually in the hallway – and sports shoes in particular can quickly cause bad smells in the apartment. This is mainly due to the moisture in the kicks. Simply sprinkle a little baking soda into the shoes and let it work for a few hours – preferably overnight.
The home remedy ensures that the damp insole dries and at the same time binds the unpleasant odors. Then just knock off your shoes. With cat litter, you can declare war on smelly shoes and create a fragrant hallway in the same way.
Vinegar instead of room spray
You don’t have to dispel unpleasant smoke smells with expensive room sprays; vinegar is particularly suitable as an uncomplicated antidote. Put some of the home remedy in a bowl of hot water and then place the container in the affected area. This will drive the unpleasant smell out of the upholstery of the furniture and the curtains.
You can also wipe surfaces suitable for this with a mixture of water and vinegar.
Hot water against the odor of the washing machine
You can also prevent the unsightly smell that comes from the washing machine – and for the future. The machine should not work in energy-saving mode at 30 degrees at least once a month, but at 60 degrees. The usual low temperatures are a perfect breeding ground for germs that can spread inside the machine over time. The fungi and bacteria from the interior of the device can cause nasty smells. The bleaching agents in heavy-duty detergents and universal products can also affect the deposits.
If possible, after each wash you should also clean the door rubber with a cloth. It is best to keep the door open after washing so that the residual moisture can escape. The same applies to the detergent compartment. Another source of trouble can be the fluff filter. Textile fibers loosened from the clothes during the wash cycle go moldy here unless they are cleaned regularly. The moldy smell pours into the laundry from here.
Banish the smell of food with potatoes and coffee
If you’re cooking something that gives off a strong odor, you can stop that with potatoes. Simply cut a tuber once and sprinkle the cut surface with salt. Then place half the potato on your work surface – this will literally soak up the stench.
Leftover coffee grounds also help to bind odors. Put the filter with coffee powder in the kitchen – the smell will disappear in no time.
