In the new Disney family blockbuster “Jungle Cruise”, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt go on a great adventure full of humor and action. Her chemistry is in the foreground, with the tatters flying behind the scenes – with a big wink, of course.
No movie star right now is bigger and in greater demand than Dwayne Johnson. Although he only recently indicated that he would at least not be returning to the “Fast & Furious” main series, he cannot complain about a lack of new projects. With “Jungle Cruise” one of them has come to German cinemas these days and also appeared directly as a PVOD on Disney + as a stream.
In it he plays Frank Wolff, who earns his bread on the Amazon with a rather battered boat and one day meets Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt). Together they set out to solve the mystery of a magical tree with special powers deep in the heart of the jungle. In doing so, they have to overcome a lot of obstacles and get rid of minions – much to the delight of the fans. Because that means a lot of action, in which the stars themselves showed their full commitment, which did not always go perfectly.
“Jungle Cruise” stars annoyed each other
It’s one of the funniest scenes in the teaser for “Jungle Cruise”: While Frank and Lily are fighting a group of villains, the scientist accidentally hits the skipper in the face. “Strong rights”, he replies. Of course, it is in truth typical film magic that should only give the impression of a hit – isn’t it?
When asked by TVSPIELFILM.de, Blunt said that was not the case: “He says I touched his nose. I didn’t.” “She did,” added Johnson directly. “She really hit my nose.” Blunt insisted that she just brushed him lightly on one of the blows. “Those were our first days of shooting, we just got to know each other,” explained “The Rock”.
It wasn’t just the demands of the shoot that made Emily Blunt hit Johnson – behind the scenes, too, she felt the urge to long for her co-star. Was she so annoyed with him? “Yeah, most of the time. But that’s part of the dynamic, that’s why you had so much fun watching the movie.” “Because I annoyed the hell out of her every day,” added Johnson.
Dwayne Johnson vs. Anakonda
A previously released video clip indicated that Blunt and Johnson were also involved in the stunts themselves. How many opportunities do you think you took away from the stunt crew? “We took some away already, didn’t we?” Asked Blunt Johnson. “We tried to do as many stunts as possible ourselves, if they were safe enough. We have great stunt doubles – but I never use mine. You know …” “Sure,” smirked Blunt. “He’s about eight.”
After all, Dwayne Johnson won’t have to worry if he ever comes across an anaconda in the jungle – at least that’s how Blunt sees it. Johnson is just too massive and would just kill the snake trying to devour him.
“Jungle Cruise” has been in German cinemas since July 29, 2021 and is available from July 30 at Disney + for EUR 21.99. If you don’t have access to the streaming service yet, you can get one here for from 8.99 euros a month.
