In its annual test, ÖKO-TEST put 50 mineral water products under the microscope. The result: not all brands are convincing. Customers should keep their hands off of two types in particular due to their high chromate and boron content.
The good news first: if you buy mineral water in Germany, you can’t go wrong. Of 50 classic waters tested, every second scored “very good”. That comes from a test by the magazine “ÖKO-TEST” (issue 7/2021) emerged.
A tip: Those who buy water from the region not only support the local mineral springs, but also ensure shorter transport routes.
The very good waters include the following:
- Adelholzener Classic
- Franken Brunnen Sparkling
- Gerolsteiner Sprudel
- Aqua Römer Classic
- Aquintus Classic
- Quelle Spritzig Nature Park
Aldi, Edeka, Rewe and Co .: This is how discount and supermarket water do
The discounter and supermarket own brands cannot completely convince in the test. Only Lidl with Saskia Classic Quelle Wörth amRhein and Kaufland with K-Classic Natural Mineral Water Sparkling can secure the overall rating “good” (grade 2).
Netto, Norma, Aldi, Penny, Rewe and Edeka still scored “satisfactory” (grade 3), while the Globus own brand received the rating “sufficient” (grade 4).
Mineral water test: which brands you should avoid
Only two mineral water brands receive the grade 5: Im St. Benedict (carbonated) from Venice, the chromate content is increased. According to the EU chemicals regulation, the substance is considered to be carcinogenic. The water was rated “poor” by the testers and comes in last.
Im Marius Quelle Classic (Sachsenheim) contains more boron than is permitted in drinking water according to the ordinance. Mineral water may contain a little more; However, ÖKO-TEST was based on the stricter limit value, as recommended by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment. The reason is “development and reproduction damaging effects” that have been proven in animal studies. In addition, a pesticide breakdown product was detected in the water. Overall, it is only sufficient here for the rating “poor” (grade 5).
But the laboratory also finds heavy metal pollution and pesticide degradation products in other products. Among other things, these water brands score “sufficient”:
- San Pellegrino (uranium slightly increased)
- Salvus Mineralwasser Classic (two pesticide degradation products proven)
- Rudolf-Quelle Spritzig (two pesticide degradation products detected & nitrate slightly increased)
Alternative: just bubble up the water yourself
In most regions of Germany, the tap water is very good – and in some cases even significantly better than bottled water, especially plastic bottles. In addition, carrying the heavy bottles is definitely not a pleasure, and the deposit system should annoy pretty much everyone. So why put yourself under this stress when you can easily make your own carbonated water with a soda maker? Probably the best-known representative here is SodaStream.
