Iberia has successfully completed its inaugural flight with an advanced extra-long-range aircraft, signaling a potential revolution in the way airlines approach long-haul travel.
The horizon of long-distance flying is brightening. Picture single-aisle configurations in narrow-body airplanes, longer routes, and significant improvements in fuel efficiency.
The new A321XLR aircraft, crafted by Airbus, is making waves in the aviation sector.
Spanish airline Iberia proudly took the lead as the first commercial carrier to operate the new A321XLR, embarking on a seven-and-a-half-hour journey from Madrid to Boston.

Why the Airbus A321XLR Is a Game-Changer in Aviation
The ‘XLR’ designation stands for ‘extra-long range’—a name earned due to its ability to reach distances of up to 7,500 kilometers (around 4,000 nautical miles), thanks to an additional fuel tank.
The A321XLR effectively addresses the previous range limitations of its predecessor, the A321LR, expanding the possible transatlantic routes available to airlines.
Moreover, it is hailed as the most fuel-efficient option on the market, capable of reducing fuel consumption per seat by up to 30% compared to older models.
“This represents a significant milestone in aviation. The new model enables us to enhance our network and reach new destinations efficiently and comfortably for all customers,” stated Marco Sansavini, president of Iberia.
Upcoming Flights with the Airbus A321XLR
In the next 15 months, Iberia plans to incorporate seven additional A321XLR aircraft into its fleet to expand transoceanic operations.
The airline is preparing for flights from Madrid to Washington Dulles, which are set to commence in mid-January 2025, with a flight duration of nine hours and 40 minutes.
However, Iberia won’t be alone in operating this revolutionary aircraft. A total of 550 A321XLR units have been ordered by various airlines, including Aer Lingus and the low-cost carrier Wizz Air.
Aer Lingus aims to initiate its A321XLR flights with an eight-hour and 30-minute route from Dublin to Nashville in April, while Wizz Air plans new seven-hour routes from London Gatwick to Jeddah in March and from Milan to Abu Dhabi in June.
