Matera enlists 5G for its future


The Matera Digital Week offers a full program of 5 days (22-26 June) dedicated to technological transition in the Lucanian capital, in which the keywords will be experimentation, applied research and scientific innovation. Within the event, which is supported by Wiredwill be held six thematic workshops with as many round tables on topics of great interest for technological progressin the Matera area and beyond.

In particular, the morning of Saturday 25 June (penultimate day of the Digital Week) will be dedicated to 5G applications and to the grounding of this strategic technology: an opportunity to test and discuss innovative solutions in the various areas of use, from industry 4.0 to telecommunications for the world of entertainment and cinema. The ambition of an event like this is to generate a constructive discussion that directly involves service providers and large and small companies interested in seizing these opportunities, in Matera and for Matera.

The morning program

The event, similarly to all the other workshops, will take place at the House of Emerging Technologies (CTE) of Matera, from 8 to 14 approximately, as said on Saturday 25 June. We will talk about 5G from a technical point of view, but above all from the advantages that this entails both on the logistical and operational front. After the institutional greetings, space will be given to keynote speeches: the first will be given by Emilio Calvanesewhich will illustrate how you can make the most of 5G and go even further, while the second will be entrusted to Kohin Hirano and will focus on AI for flood risk warning and communication. The round table, moderated by Wired and with representatives of the Houses of Emerging Technologies and of local and non-local institutions.

To coordinate the laboratory during and beyond the Digital Week will be Tommaso Di Noia of the Polytechnic of Bari, who provided us in advance with some interesting ideas in preparation for the event: “5G is one enabling technology that is transversal to various contexts and sectorsfrom the virtual reality to robotics up to 3d printing “he said. “By exploiting this innovation, it will be possible to propose innovative, more effective and functional solutions for digital transformation. In particular, unlike previous technologies, 5G allows you to take full advantage of the IoT potentialbut also to develop edge computing in multi-access mode (Mec) and bring quality to private networks“. Some concrete examples will already be visible during the morning of the laboratory, such as the aforementioned real-time alert system for the flood risk, an automatic system for assessing the conditions and the level of risk instant by instant. This analysis takes place through a system of smart webcams and an image processing system.

The fundamental themes and the most curious experiments

The effort for the use of the 5G network on a large scale in the Lucanian capital it has already begun some time ago: projects started on the occasion of the experimentation 5G Bari-Matera, where a series of solutions had already been proposed to increase the transmission speed, ie the bandwidth. “The 5G laboratory of the House of Emerging Technologies has collected this legacy and seeks to involve new industrial players to go beyond experimentation, grounding the most advanced technologies “explains Di Noia. “The purpose is simple: provide support for the Basilicata, Italian and European networks. In fact, the action starts from the territory but looks beyond and aims to become a point of reference even outside of Basilicata“, keep on.

In short, we start from the local level but the ambition is to achieve prestigious objectives also at the international level. The issues addressed will be fundamentally 3. First of all the new 5G NR interface (New Radio), installed indoors and able to guarantee higher bandwidth and lower communication latency than the previous ones. As Di Noia explains: Everything passes through 5G: in any sphere and context, a high-performance network allows the promotion of innovation and technical-strategic solutions. The second key point is the development of solutions able to fully exploit the computational resources and to adapt to the dynamism of user requests. From machine learning to deep learning to data driven approaches, the idea is to define a road map for future activities in the area. Finally, the third fundamental aspect is to distribute the communication and computation resources among different service groups, in accordance with the paradigm network slice which provides for the sharing of physical infrastructures in such a way as to create virtual logical networks. The pursuit of this objective, in essence, allows the promotion of scalable, flexible, robust and highly performing solutions.
