European Parliament leaders have issued a call for the European Union to enhance its support for Ukraine through various avenues, including political, financial, military, and humanitarian assistance.
On Tuesday, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) reiterated their unwavering commitment to Ukraine, denouncing the military collaboration between Russia and North Korea, and urging the EU to increase its backing for the beleaguered Ukrainian forces.
This resolution came in the wake of a significant address from Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy, who highlighted the alarming situation by stating, “Putin has brought 11,000 North Korean troops to Ukraine’s border.” He warned that this number could potentially escalate to 100,000.
Many of these troops have reportedly been deployed with Russia’s units in the Kursk region, where Ukraine had launched a surprise incursion in August but is now seemingly losing ground.
A formal statement released by the leaders of the EU Parliament emphasized the urgent need to “step up support for Ukraine in every possible way, including politically, financially, militarily, and with humanitarian aid.” It strongly affirmed the parliament’s commitment to stand with Ukraine until its definitive victory.
“All EU military assistance missions aim to train 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of winter,” stated EU Commissioner for Peace Didier Reynders on Tuesday. However, he acknowledged that the current level of aid is inadequate to turn the tide of war in Ukraine’s favor. “We need to step up assistance,” he stressed.
On the same day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the alliance “needs to go further” in its support for Ukraine, accusing Moscow of exacerbating the conflict by integrating North Korean troops into their ranks. Rutte remarked, “In pursuing its illegal war in Ukraine, Russia is utilizing North Korean weapons and troops, Iranian drones, and Chinese dual-use goods for its defense industry,” declaring this a dangerous evolution of the war that poses a threat to global peace and security.
For several months, European nations have been deliberating strategies to augment defense investments in Ukraine, especially amidst rising uncertainties tied to the imminent administration of president-elect Donald Trump.
Since mid-year, Russia has intensified its assaults on civilian regions in Ukraine using a combination of drone, missile, and glide bomb attacks. Concurrently, military analysts from the West report that Russian forces are advancing steadily in the eastern Donetsk region, making notable tactical gains.
