Not just crockery and cutlery: everything you can clean in the dishwasher

As the name suggests, the dishwasher cleans dirty dishes and frees us from one of the most annoying household chores there is. Interestingly, you can clean a few other items in the dishwasher that at first glance have no place in the dishwasher.

However, it is important that you think carefully beforehand to what extent the object could break in the dishwasher or, worse, bring the whole machine to a standstill.

The items that you can clean in the dishwasher are mostly made of plastic. Normal plastic is actually not damaged by the water and the high temperatures, so it is very suitable for the dishwasher. In addition to the material, it is also important that you do not put electrical objects in the dishwasher.

As a result, some items are suitable for cleaning in the dishwasher, such as: plastic hairbrushes, garden tools or children’s toys, which you should always keep safely in the laundry net. You can even clean flip-flops or potatoes in the dishwasher, provided you use a low temperature wash program.

You should also take the hair out of the brush beforehand and make sure to remove sand or earth from the toys and garden tools. This is important because too much sand, earth or even hair clog the dishwasher drain.

What doesn’t belong in the dishwasher

As already explained, the dishwasher is not suitable for items made of materials that cannot withstand high temperatures and water. Therefore, avoid putting objects made of wood or non-heat-resistant plastic in the dishwasher.

In addition, avoid putting items in the dishwasher that could possibly lead to hygienic problems, such as toilet brushes or dog toys.

Also, make sure that the items are intact, as some may not be able to withstand the water pressure with which the machine washes.
