The Corona warning app is constantly being developed and adapted to the new circumstances. The developers are now reacting to the new Delta variant and are reporting that the warning app could soon receive an adjustment for contact tracking.
The spread of the delta variant in this country is already estimated at around 60 percent of all corona infections. The developers of the official Corona warning app are now also reacting to the changed infection process with a blog entry.
Discussions are currently taking place between those involved in the project, who in addition to Telekom and SAP also include the Robert Koch and Fraunhofer Institutes. It should be discussed together whether and, if so, how the contact recording and risk calculation must be adapted for the delta variant.
It also states that at this point in time the scientific evidence is not yet sufficient to change the risk calculation. When calculating the risk, the makers of the Corona warning app are based on the recommendations for action for the similar contact person identification of the health authorities. As soon as there are changes there, the risk calculation in the Corona warning app will also be adjusted. Since the adaptation takes place on the server side, users do not have to do anything else in the event of a corresponding update.
So far, an encounter with a person who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 must have taken place for at least nine weighted minutes in a defined proximity area in order to be considered by the app as an encounter with increased risk or with a red warning.
Corona warning app: These innovations will soon be available with version 2.5
Also the update on Version 2.5 is already in progress and will then support certificates for those who have recovered in addition to a vaccination and test certificate. The COVID recovery certificate can also be used within the EU and can, for example, prove a previous infection on trips abroad. Another new feature is the ability to add and manage additional certificates in the app for other family members.
Up-to-date data on the infection situation has been available for some time in the form of widgets (daily new infections, warning persons, 7-day incidence) on the start page of the Corona warning app. With version 2.5, three additional widgets will explain the progress of the vaccination campaign at this point. The number of people who have been vaccinated at least once and who have been completely vaccinated, as well as the number of vaccination doses given, will be shown there.
The exact date for the release of the update to version 2.5 is not yet known, but a release in July is extremely likely.
Version 2.6: Local Incidence Widget
Version 2.6 is also already being planned. The details are still quite vague here, but it is already clear that the widgets on the start page should then be supplemented by another element. The local 7-day incidence will be added there and thus displayed permanently. First the federal state and then the district or district is selected.
Until the release of the Version 2.6 but it will probably take a while.
Which features can we expect in the future?
Of course, it remains to be seen which other functions the Corona warning app will receive in the future. There is no official roadmap from the developers, but suggestions and requests for future versions can be viewed on the GitHub developer platform. In the “in progress” workflow, there is another specific suggestion which, considering the current chaos of Corona rules, makes sense.
Local guidelines or the rules applicable in each federal state could be in May be included in the Corona warning app in the future and thus offer a simple overview. A similar function is already available with the free app “May I?”.
