Chip manufacturer Qualcomm has presented its own smartphone built by Asus. With the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, the company has almost everything it has to offer.
Qualcomm is so far mostly as a Manufacturer of chips and modems for smartphones appeared. Now, in cooperation with Asus, the group has presented its first smartphone – a high-end device in which Qualcomm can install pretty much everything that is currently available, technically and in terms of accessories. The so-called Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders is primarily aimed at its own community and should cost just under 1,300 euros.
The smartphone comes with a 6.78-inch Amoled screen from Samsung, which has a resolution of 2,448 by 1,080 pixels. The always-on display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. Qualcomm specifies the brightness as 800 candelas per square meter (nits), a maximum of 1,200 nits are possible. HDR-10 and 10-Plus content can be shown on the display.
Tinkering under the hood of the 5G smartphone a Snapdragon 888 with 16 gigabytes of RAM. The 64-bit octa-core processor clocks at 2.84 gigahertz. An Adreno 660 GPU is also on board. The smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders offers 512 gigabytes (USF3.1) of storage space. The device measures 173 by 77 by 9.55 millimeters and weighs 210 grams.
The fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2, is located on the back instead of under the display. The three cameras can also be found there. The main camera is equipped with Sony’s 64-megapixel sensor IMX686. The second, an ultra-wide model (Sony IMX363), snaps with 12 gigabytes. There is also an eight-megapixel telephoto lens with triple optical zoom. There is also a 24-megapixel camera in front. According to Qualcomm, 8K UHD videos can be recorded with the main camera.
Qualcomm’s high-end smartphone, which is shipped with Android 11, has a dual SIM card function. In addition to 5G, WLAN 6E (802.11a / b / g / n / ac / ax) with 2 × 2 MIMO is supported. NFC, GPS and Bluetooth 5.2 are also available. The battery has 4,000 mAh. Nothing is known yet about the possible battery life. Charging via Quickcharge 5.0 is possible, a corresponding power supply unit is included.
Qualcomm put a lot of emphasis on the sound of its smartphone. Four microphones and two stereo speakers are integrated. The device supports the Snapdragon sound technology, which is supposed to bring a high quality. The scope of delivery includes, among other things, ANC earplugs (MW08) from Master & Dynamic and a charging case.
The smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders will be launched in August and cost 1,299 euros. In addition to the USA, Qualcomm has also specified Germany and Great Britain as the markets in which the device is to be launched first.
