Sextoys polluted with pollutants: Many models fail Stiftung Warentest

In sex toys there are often substances that have no place in them. That was the result of an investigation by Stiftung Warentest. Four of the twelve tested vibrators therefore have a “poor” pollutant balance, the same applies to one of the three tested love balls. For example, the products or the accessories supplied contained polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are considered carcinogenic, and the plasticizer DEHP, which can impair fertility.

There are no special limit values for harmful substances for sex toys – even though the products usually have plenty of contact with the body and especially with the mucous membranes. According to their own statements, the product testers based their investigation on generally applicable limit values or specifications for other product groups, for example for children’s toys. The result: Often these were exceeded significantly, with some products even a hundredfold.

The pollutant load is not a question of price: the testers found toxic substances both in expensive vibrators for just under 90 euros and in cheap products. At the same time, one of the three vibrators that are “very good” in terms of pollutants costs only 15 euros, another just under 100. Even an unpleasant plastic odor when unpacking the box for the first time is not a reliable indicator of the pollutant load, according to the information: This occurred in several products in the test – but some of them turned out to be completely harmless otherwise.

In principle, product testers advise you to clean vibrators and other sex toys thoroughly before and after each use. So no germs can spread on it.

Users should also be careful with digitized sex toys: some vibrators can be remotely controlled via an app, others have a built-in camera. Security gaps in data transmission and storage were not found in the specific cases – but they cannot be ruled out either. The product testers therefore generally advise against producing such intimate data and images of themselves.
