Sony Xperia 1 III Test

At the camera come like at the previous generation Zeiss lenses used. But Sony is the first smartphone manufacturer to use a movable lens in the Xperia 1 III that works with either two focal lengths: either with 70 millimeters with an f / 2.3 aperture and almost 2.9 times optical magnification or with a focal length of 105 millimeters an f / 2.8 aperture, which corresponds to approximately 4.4 times, particularly strong magnification. The Japanese make use of the specialist knowledge from their own SLR camera division of the Alpha series.

Unfortunately, the device does not offer an optically continuous zoom, only these two specified zoom levels. The advantage for the user is therefore limited to the fact that the image section does not change when the zoom levels are changed, only the angle of view.

In addition to this special lens, the camera setup also consists of:

  • 12-megapixel standard wide-angle main camera with a bright f / 1.7 aperture
  • 12 megapixel ultra wide angle camera with conventional f / 2.2 aperture
  • Depth of field sensor

In our laboratory test, the Sony Xperia 1 III proves to be a good camera smartphone. In daylight, the image quality of the wide-angle main camera is on a good level, although it cannot keep up with the top quality of some other flagships. On the other hand, the image quality does not deteriorate much under poor lighting conditions and we are positively surprised by the result, especially when taking photos with the handheld. Of course, you can also take selfies with the Sony flagship, the front camera does a good job and is more than sufficient, especially for video calls. The Sony Xperia 1 III achieved a grade of 1.7 (good) in our expert photo evaluation.

The photography experience at Sony is another matter entirely. Because the camera app is fantastic, especially if you know the menu navigation and options of SLR cameras. This starts with high-quality filter options and manually adjustable exposure times and ends with individually adjustable focus point limits and a manually adjustable number of series photo recordings per second. There are also very extensive apps from other manufacturers such as Huawei or third-party providers that can be installed on almost any Android smartphone. But, in our experience, only Sony can currently offer a native photo app of this size and smooth performance.

There is also another button on the right side of the Xperia 1 III that serves as a shutter release for the camera. It has two pressure levels (focus – release) and also gives off a touch of camera feeling.
