The fan base for stand-up paddle boards is growing and growing. The reasons are varied, because the SUPs are not only a cool training device, they are also a lot of fun in the water. But you shouldn’t just plunge into the waters like that. With the right apps, you are perfectly prepared for all SUP adventures.
What was still being dragged on about SUP riders a few years ago? But anyone who has dared to go on a stand-up paddle board usually quickly realizes that it’s a pretty cool thing. You are out and about in nature, have a lot of fun and train effectively at the same time.
You can tell that SUPs are no longer exotic from the fact that Aldi and Lidl have the boards on sale and that it is always there strong offers are. So the demand is high. The first rides may be a bit shaky, but as soon as you get the hang of it, you can’t wait to get back on the SUP. A good SUP is half the battle. At this point, we would like to introduce you to practical apps with which you can increase the SUP fun even more.
Check SUP weather
Most smartphone users are likely to have a weather app in use. As with other outdoor activities, a weather check in advance is mandatory for SUP riders. the WarnWetter app from the German Weather Service is a good choice so as not to be surprised by a thunderstorm. The free version is sufficient for this purpose. Practical: Inland sea warnings are free, the full version also includes coastal and sea weather. This can also be important for SUP fans.
Wind forecast for SUP enthusiasts
Do not underestimate the influence of the wind on SUP tours. An app like Windy provides practical predictions and lots of details for this topic. But contrary to what the name suggests, Windy not only provides information about wind influences. Rather, the app combines different models for weather forecasting and prepares this data in a graphically attractive manner.
Information about water levels
The app My levels provides official water level and flood information with around 2,500 gauges in Germany and the Netherlands. So you can always decide whether it is safe to go out with the SUP or not. In addition to the current water level, the app also shows forecasts and notifies you, if you wish, if the levels exceed or fall below threshold values. There is also an overview of flood information and warning situations.
Plan and record SUP tours
Of course, you can simply set off on a lake for half an hour with the SUP. But if you have mastered your board, you will soon want to go on longer tours. As with hiking, you should plan this in advance. The app Canua of the German Canoe Association (DKV) also covers the needs of SUP riders.
It contains descriptions of water bodies, navigation rules, launching and launching points and a lot more information for Germany and the neighboring countries including Corsica and the Baltic states. The two main functions in addition to this information are route planning and recording via GPS. Canua is based on Europe’s most extensive water database with around 80,000 spots and 2,160 bodies of water.
Track SUP tour with the sports app
But there are other ways to track a SUP tour. Smartwatches such as the Apple Watch are one option, but sports watches, such as those from Garmin, also offer a SUP mode.
Also with Diet or other sports tracking apps, you can at least record the activity. Separate SUP modes are not yet available for this. But if you only ride SUP occasionally, you don’t necessarily have to change the app and have running, cycling and SUP tours under one roof.
Even more SUP fun with apps
Riding SUP is fun and with the apps shown, you can prepare yourself even more easily and record the tours very easily.
