Up to 140 km / h possible: Bomb cyclone Daniel is heading for Germany
On Wednesday it will be stormy in northern Germany. A very rapid depression is sweeping across the north. The wind peaks reach 140 km / h and the water of the North Sea rises. But that is not all. Because deep Daniel also drives out the warm air.
Wednesday morning the stormy weather starts. The wind is picking up speed all over the north. Inland gusts of up to 100 km / h are to be expected. Things are much more intense on the coasts. The wind peaks over the North Sea reach 140 km / h in the afternoon.
Bomb cyclone reaches the North Sea
The wind comes from the north and hits the German coast. Especially in East Frisia you have to expect gusts of up to 120 km / h even inland. The water is pressed into the Ems and Weser estuaries.
The risk of storm surges increases. However, Daniel is probably too fast. Because the storm moves so quickly that the water will probably not be able to rise to storm surge level. Nevertheless, caution is advised, because such storms are always good for surprises.
Hurricane and snow on the Baltic Sea
Storm Daniel moves into the Baltic Sea by evening. And here, too, there are hurricane gusts with wind speeds of up to 120 km / h. The Holstein coast from Kiel to Fehmarn is particularly affected, and further on, of course, Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania – but with slightly lower wind speeds.
But even if the wind gets a little weaker, Deep Daniel still has something in his luggage. The storm can tap cold air from Scandinavia. The cold air is led across the Baltic Sea to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and northern Brandenburg. As a result, up to 10 centimeters of fresh snow can fall. So after a short warm air injection, winter is coming back. This can be seen particularly well in the general weather situation.
Jet is coming back from the north
Of course, Daniel also has a cause. As early as Tuesday, the jet will push the low pressure area, so to speak. That is why such an intense low pressure area can develop in the first place. But on the back of Daniel the wind turns north again. And that clears the way for cold air masses from the north.
But not only that. When the jet came in from the north a few days ago, a snow storm hit the British Isles. And even now everything looks like the same thing will happen again from Friday to Saturday. Only the storm is a few hundred kilometers further south. That means storm and rain for England, but in Germany it looks like a lot of snow again. So deep Daniel brings us back the winter.
